The Benefits of St. John’s Wort
I started feeling the benefits of St. John’s wort within a couple days of beginning taking it. I found that it ‘took the edge’ off as I wasn’t feeling nearly as irritable. I also felt more positive and energetic.
I started taking it in a capsule form over a year ago. It definitely worked for me in relieving my symptoms of depression.
I’ve actually been meaning to stop taking it for quite awhile now, but I’ve been a bit afraid of the effect it might have on my mood!
So What is it?
St. John’s wort is a perennial shrubby plant with golden flowers that is common in Europe as well as the United States.
It is the most popular herbal treatment for mild to moderate depression.
Hypericin is thought to be the active ingredient, which is believed to act by inhibiting the uptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.
The starting dose is typically 900 milligrams per day, with three hundred milligram tablets taken three times daily.
What Are The Benefits?
Aside from improving your symptoms, the main benefits of St. John’s wort over standard antidepressants is the lack of significant side effects and that it’s lower in cost. I personally have not felt any side effects from taking it. Potential side effects I’ve read about include headaches, irritability, anxiety, insomnia and increased sensitivity to sunlight.
As always, prior to taking any new herbal supplement, you should consult with your family doctor. Do your own research and read as many good books about depression as you can as well.
